The evaluation is performed by an Occupational Therapist who has received specialized training as a Driving Rehabilitation Specialist. We contact your physician for permission to perform a driving evaluation. The total evaluation lasts between 3-4 hours and consists of a comprehensive, pre-clinical assessment and a behind-the-wheel assessment. The pre-clinical assessment looks at vision, cognition, physical abilities, behavior, judgment, attention, perception, and reaction time. It is performed at our office on Purdue Road. The behind-the-wheel segment will be performed in our dual equipped evaluation vehicle. The road course that we use depends on what type of driver you are. If you are not an interstate driver, we will not drive on the interstate. We ask that you have a family member or friend bring you to our office and, if possible remain for the duration of the evaluation process. If you do not have transportation, arrangements can be made for the therapist to come to your location. At the conclusion of the evaluation, we sit down with you and your family or friend, if you choose to include them, and discuss the results. A complete typewritten evaluation will be mailed to you and your physician. Note: At this time, Medicare and many other secondary payers do not consider driving to be “medically necessary” and will not pay for this service.
